Hirado Shozui
The ``Shouzui pattern,'' which is widely known as a pattern for pottery, is an auspicious pattern in which figures are arranged geometrically on background patterns such as tortoise shell and Qinghai waves. Hirado Shozui, hand-painted in deep indigo and produced in the Mikawachi area of Nagasaki Prefecture, near Arita Town, exudes both precision and generosity, and conveys the warmth of handicrafts. It is said that Marquis Matsuura, the lord of the Hirado domain, which prospered as Nagasaki's first Western trading port, loved it dearly. It is a formal vessel that is loved by people of all ages and genders for its calm texture and is suitable for everyday life.
